Psalm 103: So Great is His Love

After seeing this painting, one of my subscribers emailed back to me about how touched she was, and shared with me the poem she wrote after her mother passed away several years ago. This is part of her email and the poem:
Your beautiful painting tonight is what I envisioned in my poem, although many years later you have shown our lives as very fleeting but God'a love so great as to forgive us so many weaknesses and transgressions. Here is my poem. I have not shared it before tonight: For My Mom Silken seeds of dandelion drift like feather-down above me, Graceful dancers on the sultry summer breeze, Fleeting performers in a very brief minuet Ingrained images to draw from memory, A faded photograph both wonderful and bittersweet. Clutched closely to your heart yet gently held, Fly high tiny dancers, Life does not allow a double take. By: ChristeneB
Psalm 103 tells us a lot about God's love, so it was difficult to choose which aspect to paint. I really found it uplifting, so I hope that you will take the time to read it as well. I got the dandelion idea from verses 15 and 16 which mention man being like a flower of the field, flourishing for a time but then passing away. This image contrasts with the next verse which talks about God's love being everlasting. Psalm 103 also talks about the width and depth of God's love being as high as the heavens, so I wanted to include some distance and sky over the field.
The colours in the painting turned out to be so pale and delicate that I'm not sure it has as grand an impact on the viewer asit should, for the idea it's portraying. I started by painting the sky, then worked my way forward to the field, blending the colours while the paint was still wet, and then the fluffy flower last. This is the same way I would paint a body of water.
Psalm 103 (New International Version)Of David. 1 Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits- 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, 5 who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. 6 The LORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. 7 He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel: 8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. 9 He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; 10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; 14 for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; 16 the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. 17 But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children- 18 with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts. 19 The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all. 20 Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. 21 Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will. 22 Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the LORD, O my soul.

Psalm 102: Awake

The first half of Psalm 102 is depressing, but the second half gives us hope. I chose to paint from the sad side this time, specifically verses 6 and 7, where it mentions an owl among ruins. Later, God comes along and has compassion on his people, which shows us that he sometimes allows devastating things to happen, but will come and rebuild if we are faithful to him. 6 I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins. 7 I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof.

Psalm 101: Morals

In Psalm 101, David says he will be careful to lead a blameless life. This is a conscious decision and an effort for each of us, since there are so many distractions and temptations all around us. My painting today depicts an "everyman" at home (since this psalm talks about choosing what you allow into your house) and he is having some quiet time in the morning, maybe praying and "putting to silence all the wicked in the land" of his mind heart. Psalm 101 (New International Version)Of David. A psalm. 1 I will sing of your love and justice; to you, O LORD, I will sing praise. 2 I will be careful to lead a blameless life— when will you come to me? I will walk in my house with blameless heart. 3 I will set before my eyes no vile thing. The deeds of faithless men I hate; they will not cling to me. 4 Men of perverse heart shall be far from me; I will have nothing to do with evil. 5 Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret, him will I put to silence; whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart, him will I not endure. 6 My eyes will be on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me; he whose walk is blameless will minister to me. 7 No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no one who speaks falsely will stand in my presence. 8 Every morning I will put to silence all the wicked in the land; I will cut off every evildoer from the city of the LORD.

Psalm 100: Enter His Gates With Thanksgiving

Loved the idea of a gate, and moving towards God as if on a path.
Psalm 100 (New International Version)A psalm. For giving thanks. 1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his a]">[a] ; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Psalm 99: Let The Nations Tremble
by Melani Pyke on 2/23/2010 8:20:53 PM

Verse 1 talks about the earth shaking, so I painted the earth and sun, but the painting still seemed to be missing something. Next I added the worshipping hands, since Psalm 99 asks us a couple of times to worship God. The bubble in the middle was supposed to be a sun spot, but I think it must be a symbol of something, though I'm not sure what.
Psalm 99 (New International Version) 1 The LORD reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake. 2 Great is the LORD in Zion; he is exalted over all the nations. 3 Let them praise your great and awesome name— he is holy. 4 The King is mighty, he loves justice— you have established equity; in Jacob you have done what is just and right. 5 Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy. 6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel was among those who called on his name; they called on the LORD and he answered them. 7 He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud; they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them. 8 O LORD our God, you answered them; you were to Israel a]">[a] a forgiving God, though you punished their misdeeds. b]">[b] 9 Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the LORD our God is holy.

Psalm 98: Marvelous Things

So the rivers clap and the mountains sing. This loud psalm made me think that the way we sing and praise God is like a reflection. By loving God we dimly reflect the way he loves us. Psalm 98 (New International Version)A psalm. 1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. 2 The LORD has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. 3 He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. 4 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; 5 make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, 6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn— shout for joy before the LORD, the King. 7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. 8 Let the rivers clap their hands, Let the mountains sing together for joy; 9 let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.

Psalm 97: The Mountains Melt Like Wax

Today's sky-and-mountains painting with a tornado of fire is based on verses 2 to 5, which you can read below.
2 Clouds and thick darkness surround him;
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 Fire goes before him
and consumes his foes on every side.
4 His lightning lights up the world;
the earth sees and trembles.
5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD,
before the Lord of all the earth.

Psalm 96: Declare the Glory
by Melani Pyke on 2/20/2010 8:49:55 PM

Today's painting is wildly different from yesterday's grazing sheep. If you saw them side by side, you'd never think they were done by the same artist. It's fun do do something unexpected. You were expecting another lovely psalm painting, just one of many, but probably not expecting this graphic style.
I started by painting the canvas black, before I knew what I would do. Then I blocked in the figures and flags in white. I then painted them in with colour straight from the tube. The figures were inspired by worship dance, as well as by the excitement of olympic winners, with their flags draped proudly around them, and fans passionately waving their own flags.
"Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples."

Psalm 94: Supported

Those are my feet, and maybe yours as well. Always climbing through rocky territory, and even though I can't see him, God is there underneath me. My painting today is based on verses 18 and 19, which reminded me of how we can and should rely on God when our circumstances are slippery:When I said, "My foot is slipping," your love, O LORD, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.

Psalm 93: The Seas Have Lifted Up
by Melani Pyke on 2/17/2010 8:12:04 PM

The seas obey God, and the mightiest waves bow down to him. God is like the pillar in the painting, with the waves dancing around, praising the king. Psalm 93 (New International Version) 1 The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and is armed with strength. The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. 2 Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity. 3 The seas have lifted up, O LORD, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves. 4 Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea— the LORD on high is mighty. 5 Your statutes stand firm; holiness adorns your house for endless days, O LORD.

Psalm 92: Flourish Like a Palm Tree
by Melani Pyke on 2/16/2010 7:35:25 PM
Comment on this

As I read Psalm 92, I wanted to do another music-themed painting, but the green theme was also appealing. I especially found verses 12 to 14 refreshing, so this is what I've based today's painting on:
"But the godly will flourish like palm trees
and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon.
For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house.
They flourish in the courts of our God.
Even in old age they will still produce fruit;
they will remain vital and green."
The white woosh lines around the palm trees give it a musical look anyway. The trees are like people praising God.

Psalm 91: Under God's Protection

Here is a painting that got away from me and painted itself. I intended to paint a closeup of the young bird with the parent's wing running off the canvas, looking down on stones or snares in the background. What ended up instead is a rainy sky with birds of prey in a nest. Either way, I think it shows what Psalm 91 is talking about: God protecting us.

Psalm 90: Swept Away
by Melani Pyke on 2/14/2010 9:05:05 PM

This psalm reminds me how tiny and frail and helpless we are compared with God. The psalm puts it so much better than I can, so it's worth a read. I wondered for a few minutes how I could even begin to illustrate it on a small canvas. The best I came up with was this "everyman" standing in awe of the awesomeness (is that a word??) of space. 1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. 2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You turn men back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, O sons of men." 4 For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. 5 You sweep men away in the sleep of death; they are like the new grass of the morning- 6 though in the morning it springs up new, by evening it is dry and withered. 7 We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9 All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. 10 The length of our days is seventy years— or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span a]">[a] is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. 11 Who knows the power of your anger? For your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you. 12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. 13 Relent, O LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. 16 May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. 17 May the favor b]">[b] of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.

Psalm 89: Established

Today's painting is based on the references in Psalm 89 to God ruling the elements, like the hand drawing a map. It also shows guidance, since it could be God's hand guiding King David. The hands can also remind us of the promise standing firm through the generations as in verses 3 and 4. You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, 'I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.' "

Psalm 86: My God

Psalm 86 (New International Version)A prayer of David. 1 Hear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. 2 Guard my life, for I am devoted to you. You are my God; save your servant who trusts in you. 3 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I call to you all day long. 4 Bring joy to your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. 5 You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you. 6 Hear my prayer, O LORD; listen to my cry for mercy. 7 In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you will answer me. 8 Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord; no deeds can compare with yours. 9 All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, O Lord; they will bring glory to your name. 10 For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God. 11 Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. 12 I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. 13 For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths of the grave. a]">[a] 14 The arrogant are attacking me, O God; a band of ruthless men seeks my life— men without regard for you. 15 But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. 16 Turn to me and have mercy on me; grant your strength to your servant and save the son of your maidservant. b]">[b] 17 Give me a sign of your goodness, that my enemies may see it and be put to shame, for you, O LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

Psalm 85: Forgiven

Today's painting is about God's forgiveness. It is similar to the prodigal son paintings I've done in the past, but a wayward son coming home is a wonderful way to illustrate forgiveness. As Psalm 85 verse 2 in the Contemporary English Version puts it, "You have forgiven the sin and taken away the guilt of your people."

Psalm 84 (New International Version)For the director of music. According to gittith. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.a]">[a] 1 How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty! 2 My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. 3 Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young— a place near your altar, O LORD Almighty, my King and my God. 4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. Selah 5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage. 6 As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools. b]">[b] 7 They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion. 8 Hear my prayer, O LORD God Almighty; listen to me, O God of Jacob. Selah 9 Look upon our shield, c]">[c] O God; look with favor on your anointed one. 10 Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. 11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. 12 O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you.

Psalm 83: Show Your Power

Today's painting, like Psalm 83, is a prayer that God would show His power to destroy the many surrounding enemies. I painted the background first, and noticed a dove shape in the light area, so I went with it, and you can still see it beneath the attacking lion which symbolizes God's power. I love the contrast here: a dove is a symbol of peace.

My painting today was based on Psalm 82 verse 3: "Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed." A guardian angel surrounds a young boy, just like we are to stand up for those in need of protection. I think my angel turned out looking a little too scary, though, like a ghost is sneaking up from behind.

After reading today's psalm, #81, I got thinking about God's relationship with mankind, and just how amazing it is that God chooses to have a relationship with us at all. I liked the musical theme in this psalm, so I've represented "us" in the various instruments along the bottom reaching up to heaven, and God as the three trumpets along the top (for Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.)

Psalm 80: The Vine
by Melani Pyke on 2/4/2010 9:32:01 PM
Comment on this
|
Definitely influenced by the Niagara landscape as well as Psalm 80, today's painting is of a grapevine. Psalm 80 uses the metaphor of a vine, which stands for a nation, sometimes flourishing and sometimes being eaten away by wild animals. It also reminds me of John 15 verses 1-5 in the New Testament, where Jesus talks about himself as the vine and believers as the branches, some of which bear fruit and some of which rot:
"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunesa]">[a]so that it will be even more fruitful.3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

Psalm 77: And Then I Remembered
by Melani Pyke on 2/1/2010 8:24:37 PM

What do you do when your troubles keep you awake at night, and God seems to be absent? Like the psalmist, we can remember the good things that God has done for us in the past. In Psalm 77, Asaph remembers when God delivered Israel out of Egypt. I've tried to illustrate this in today's painting with a cloud like a thought bubble, with images inside that represent God's power, like lightening and mountains.
"I will meditate on all your works
and consider all your mighty deeds."
